PREVIOUS EVENTS This site will include all events that have previously happened to help us raise our funds for rebuilding. (No longer front page items!)
For Release March 8, 2009 Rialto Dinner Sells Out All the tickets for the second annual Rialto Theatre dinner/auction are already gone due to a combination of circumstances. Members of the committee planning the benefit said some miscommunication and everyone trying to make the event a success resulted in tickets going on sale earlier than the planned March 9 date, and demand was so strong that they were gone in just a few hours, before the situation was identified. Committee members said they will make sure it doesn’t happen next year. Because of the overwhelming response the dinner committee is considering a second special dinner, possibly in a few months, and is trying to enlist more volunteers to help with all the work that is involved. Rialto board members are surprised by the early sell-out, but happy that so many people want to help. They hope that some of those who were willing to pay $100 for the dinner will still donate that amount to the building fund, which has been hurt by the downturn in the economy. “They won’t get this meal and the good company, but they get a bigger deduction and help the Rialto more, which is what this is all about,” one said. Construction continues on the second of the four construction phases. Enough funds are available to keep working through March, but if donations slow down due to the economy and other reasons the rebuilding work may need to take a break while more funds are found. Donations can be sent to the Rialto at P.O. Box 874 in Deer Lodge.
February 1, 2009 Second Rialto Dinner/Auction Planned Preparations are underway for the Second Annual Rialto Theatre fundraising dinner and auction on Saturday, April 4. “Dinner for a Movie, Act II” will be held at the St. Mary’s Center in Deer Lodge again this year, and volunteers hope to surpass the success of the 2008 event. The $50,000 raised at the first dinner helped to get construction going last July, and the committee hopes to raise at least that much this time to help keep the project going. Donated items for the live and silent auctions are currently being solicited so they can be displayed in advance and put in the program for the evening. Those with quality auction items can take them to Kirk Sandquist or Amber Brown at Peoples Bank of Deer Lodge or Jan and Gerald Bender at Valley Foods. Tickets will be $100 per person this year and will go on sale in March. The event is expected to sell out very quickly again, and the date tickets go on sale and the ticket locations will be announced in early March. The five course meal will feature filet mignon and many other epicurean delights. More information on auction items and the dinner will also be posted on the Rialto website, www.deerlodgerialto.com, as it becomes available.
January 25, 2009 A check in the amount of $340 was received which represented the proceeds from the Treasure State Chorale concert in Missoula on Dec. 14, 2008. As we remember the weather was a huge factor in keeping large number of people from going to the concert. Phil and Francine Harris had done a great deal of promotion for this event and they were as disappointed as all of us that Mother Nature took such a frigid turn. The Chorale also decided to send us a check for $160 from their own funds to bring the total to $500. We thank them so much for all the work they did and for this generous donation! They have also offered to do a "Dedication" Concert when we open the doors and we're sure hoping that we can have that happen sooner than later! THANKS AGAIN TREASURE STATE CHORALE!! ____________________________________________________________________________________ January 21, 2009 The Cutler Brothers Improv night on January 19, 2009 was considered a success with 55 people in attendance. The Rialto Restoration Fund was the happy recipient of $562.75 as a result of the efforts of the Cutler Bros and troupe! We continue to be very grateful for all of these types of fundraisers. THANK YOU CUTLER BROTHERS AND ALL WHO HELPED WITH THIS EVENT! _____________________________________________________________________________________________ January 8, 2009 @10:00 P.M.....Personal Note from Gayle: I just got home from the theater and I have to tell you I was totally overwhelmed when I got there and saw the unbelievable hub of activity going on! There were 25 men (firefighters and the Wed. night crew) volunteering their time to help us on our road to restoring the theater! These are all guys that had already put in their shift at their respective jobs. They will also be there tomorrow night and as one of them said to me they will be there WHENEVER we call. To say there was a tear in my eye is an understatement!! Whenever I get discouraged that we might not be able to get all the money that we need to finish this project, we have these kinds of things happen and we certainly are encouraged that there are people out there that really do care that we will have this theater again...Thank you so much you guys for giving us hope!! (I'm trying to get all the pictures up as soon as I can so be sure to check out our "New Pictures" link.) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The following are the articles that appeared in the Silver State Post on June 11, 2008. DINNER NETS THOUSANDS FOR DAMAGED THEATER By: Kate Schwab, Reporter The tickets sold out within three days. Jumping at the chance for a rare treat, the who's who of Deer Lodge gourmets descended on the St. Mary's Center on Saturday night for cocktails, dinner and an extravagant array of elegant sweets. A fundraiser for the Rialto Theater, the hundred-dollars-per-plate affair had been swiftly arranged to take advantage of a match grant offer from Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan, organizers said. Becky Blakely, a retired executive pastry chef, planned a beautifully presented menu of spring salad in a provolone cone, stuffed mushrooms, shrimp bisque, beef tenderloin, Santa Fe shrimp, vegetables and twice-baked potatoes. Assisted by Michael Walker, Blakely also spent more than a week preparing a lavish, jaw-dropping assortment of cakes, bon-bons and cream puffs garnished with tuxedo strawberries, chocolate filigrees and pastry swans. "If it wasn't for her, we would not have had that caliber of a dinner," organizer Jan Bender said, adding, "she loved working with all of the volunteers." Blakely, who has prepared lunch for former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, put off plans to finish remodeling her Deer Lodge home to do the Rialto fundraiser, Bender said. Restaurateur Ron Scharf said he and his wife, Joyce, enjoyed the chance to sit down and enjoy a nice meal with friends. "That was one of the finest meals that's ever been served in Deer Lodge that I know of," Scharf said. He was especially impressed by the attentive, professional behavior displayed by all of the teenage volunteers who helped serve dinner. "There was no foolish business," Scharf commented. "They were just all business." Jim Lane kept everyone laughing as he skillfully auctioneered 29 donated items with help from his wife DeeDee and Kerry Bruner. A Boyer bronze deer sculpture sold for $4,100, a University of Montana Grizzlies' jersey signed by Deer Lodge graduate Carson Bender fetched $700, a photo safari to South Africa brought in $4,300 and a rare, 100-year-old bottle of Crown Royal netted $800. Highlights of the concurrent silent auction included an antique water closet and a scrolled metal fire-pit. Receipts and expenses from the event were still being processed on Monday. "We think it will tally up to be just under $50,000," Bender said. Because the Rialto is a registered 501(c) 3 charity, all donations and ticket sales were fully tax-deductible. Fulfilling a promise to donate $50,000 and match individual donations up to $50,000 by June 1, Tom Welch of Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan presented the Rialto board with a check for $100,906.20 before the auction. The extra $906.20 was given to match funds over the $50,000 mark from individual donations raised during the challenge period, Pioneer Federal vice president Mike Richards said Monday. In addition to a $3,000 contribution from the Deer Lodge Woman's Club, two small grants came in during the challenge period, Rialto board member Steve Owens said Monday. Powell County Community Foundation gave $8,000; and Deer Lodge Historic Preservation brought in $4,500. Including anticipated dinner proceeds, Deer Lodge has raised about $1.5 million for the theater, Owens said. Repairing it is a $3.5 million project. Volunteers from the Knights of Columbus and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans helped in the kitchen with last-minute dinner preparations, filled plates and collected dirty dishes. Making appearances as a tragicomic figure, actor Jackie Gleason, aging songstress Ruby Devine, a bad boy and Oklahoma's "Ado Annie," members of the Deer Lodge Players waited tables and served as spotters for the auction. Powell County High School students representing FFA, National Honor Society, and Immaculate Conception Youth Group served the meal and kept glasses filled. Frank "Frog" Hull, 75, of Dillon served as master of ceremonies. Steve Owens and Tom Welch also took a few minutes to speak about the Rialto project and community donations. Attendees owe special thanks to Blakely for her donated expertise, Bender said. In addition to Blakely, the donors and the other volunteers who helped put together the ambitious event, fundraiser committee members thanked Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, which donated the use of the St. Mary's Center space. Members of the organizing committee were Bender and her husband Gerald, Chef Blakely, Kirk and Betty Sandquist, Lee Jewell, Gloria Andersen, Bob and Karen Toole, Ron and Joyce Scharf, Steve Owens, Gayle Mizner and Ron and Carol Mjelde. ****************************************************************************************************** CONSTRUCTION TO START ON RIALTO BEFORE MONTH IS OUT By Kate Schwab, Reporter Construction on Deer Lodge's fire-ravaged Rialto Theater is set to begin before the end of the month, board members said this week. Steve Owens confirmed June 16 as the tentatively scheduled start date. The new theater will seat 550 people, with 330 seats downstairs and 220 more in an upstairs balcony. Board members had debated the balcony as a potentially unnecessary frill, but finally give it the go-ahead, Owens said. "The balcony is what will make it functional," Owens explained, adding, "if we don't build it adequately, nobody's going to build a 600 seat theater next door." Space upstairs provides more room to put in needed seats, construct all the necessary bathrooms and keep the six-foot drop in the sloping downstairs floor so that audiences can see. "It might not be finished right away, but it'll be there, structurally," Owens said. The theater's layout has been modified to comply with new building codes and legal requirements for accommodating persons with disabilities, Owens said. Board members have been working with engineers to keep construction costs down, Owens said. Because steel prices have risen sharply since January, engineers will be removing an original heavy steel support beam and replacing it with an efficient, safe system of smaller wooden supports, Owens said. Other costs are being kept down by designating some wish-list items as alternates, or things that do not need to be completed immediately. Still, the new theater should have some nice perks, Owens said. These include more leg room between the seats, plenty of bathrooms and a full surround-sound system. ************************************************************************************************* PICTURES FROM DINNER/AUCTION FUNDRAISER ON JUNE 7, 2008 (Taken by Gayle Mizner)

Students of School District #1 presenting check in the amount of $819.68 to Gayle Mizner, Board Member. The students conducted a "Bring your change for the Rialto" drive in April to be able to get their money in to help meet the Pioneer Federal Savings & Loan Association $50,000 challenge. The kids of our community have been a huge driving force in our fundraising efforts and have contributed over $15,000. thus far for our efforts. We continue to be inspired and thankful for their efforts! **************************************************************************************** PRESS RELEASE FOR APRIL 30, 2008 Rialto and Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan By Mark Eisenbeil Reporter The funds, from Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan's challenge grant for the reconstruction of the Rialto Community Theater, are steadily rising toward the goal of $50,000. As of the morning of Friday, April 25, the total amount had grown to over $34,000, according to Pioneer Savings and Loan Vice President Mike Richards. As previously announced in the Silver State Post, Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan (of Deer Lodge and Dillon) had announced its intention of granting $100,000 to the Rialto Community Theater for its rebuilding. The savings and loan was granting $50,000 outright to the theater and the other $50,000 was a challenge grant. The challenge grant's purpose is to incite public involvement with donations; the financial institution is willing to match public donations with a grant of up to $50,000, which would create a total donation to the Rialto Community Theater of $150,000. A three month period was chosen, ending on June 1, for the community to contribute to the joint effort. According to Rialto Community Theatre Board of Director President Steve Owens, the amount has been changing every day with new donations. He says that in the last couple of weeks, activity has increased at a steady pace. Most donations are from $50 to $500 and so far there has been at least 130 donors from all over Montana and eight other states since the challenge began in late February. Owens says that he and the board are confident that they will take in at least $50,000 by the June deadline and that the more money that they have now, the further they can go with construction when it begins in the summer. Contributions can be mailed to: The Rialto , P.O. Box 874, Deer Lodge, MT 59722 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "A DINNER FOR A MOVIE" By Bill Fundis Publisher A group of local businesspeople, together with Rialto board members, have organized a festive outing coordinated to help raise a portion of the $50,000.00 matching fund offered by Pioneer Federal Savings & Loan to assist in the restoration of the Rialto. The "Gala event of the year" in Deer Lodge is scheduled for June 7, 2008, and will take place at the St. Mary's Center. This five course, five star dinner will be served in royal fashion, beginning with cocktails at 6:00 that evening. Dinner itself will be served at 7:00, and consists of a stuffed mushroom appetizer followed by shrimp bisque soup, spring salad, and an entr'ee of tenderloin of beef, Santa Fe shrimp, twice baked potato, and a vegetable medley. The meal will be topped off with a cre'me de la cre'me dessert extravaganza, described as a chocoholic and sweet tooth's dream. The meal will be prepared by retired executive pastry chef Becky Blakely, Rialto volunteers, Rick Sewell and Knights of Columbus volunteers, and Lutheran Thrivent volunteers. Mrs. Blakely has prepared meals for dignitaries around the world, and frequently delighted guests at the Kennedy Center with her magic. The meal will be served in elaborate fashion by a troupe of the Deer Lodge Players in costume as actors and actresses, students from the Powell County High School Honor Society, and Powell County High School FFA members, as well as other volunteers. The Master of Ceremonies for your pleasure that night will be none other than Frank E. "Frog" Hull, "giver of speeches, and singer of songs". Mr. Hull grew up in Deer Lodge, graduated from PCHS and has lived in Dillon for many years. He has entertained audiences over most of Montana and is a much sought after personality for special events. The evening will be closed out after the meal with a live auction, including memorabilia of the Rialto, handcrafted furniture, and gorgeous pieces of art, just to name a few of the items to be auctioned off by auctioneer Jim Lane. How, you ask can you be a part of this most memorable event. Tickets are on sale now at Valley Foods and Keystone Drugs. You need to be aware that there is limited seating for this event, the price of admittance is $100.00 for an individual, $175.00 a couple, or you can purchase a table of your own seating eight people for just $725.00. That might sound a little pricey, but remember all of the proceeds are going to the Rialto Restoration Fund, a 501(c)3 charity. That makes the at least a portion of the cost a charitable donation. This is your opportunity to use part of that tax stimulus rebate, most of you will be receiving next month, to support a good cause and the beauty of this is you could quite possibly use it as a charitable deduction on next years tax return. Remember, when the reservations are gone, they're gone. Get your reservations made now, you do not want to miss this once in a lifetime Deer Lodge event. ************************************************************************************* Rialto fundraiser to help bring back moviesBy Pat Hansen - 04/29/2008DEER LODGE — People are invited to indulge themselves with an evening of dining and entertainment on Saturday, June 7, at St. Mary’s Center in Deer Lodge and assist in the restoration of the historic Rialto Theatre. Proceeds from the dinner and auction will help bring back the movies that ended with the November 2006 fire that severely damaged the historic structure. “A Dinner For A Movie” will include a five-course dinner featuring tenderloin of beef and Santa Fe shrimp, and concluding with a dessert extrava-ganza created by retired executive pastry chef Becky Blakely of Deep Creek, Md., formerly of Butte and Deer Lodge. Blakely’s culinary experience has been extensive since she graduated from Spokane Community College Culinary program and from the Pastry School in Seattle where she studied under Fritz Schlaughter, a member of the U.S. Culinary Olympic Pastry Team. Before her retirement, Blakely was executive pastry chef at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Gaithersburg and taught culinary arts in Maryland. She was the executive chef at the Adams Mark Hotel in Houston and owned “The Pastry Chef” in the Maryland and Washington, D.C. areas. Master of ceremonies will be entertainer Frank “Frog” Hull, of Dillon, formerly of Deer Lodge. Organizers say auction items will include Grizzly, Bobcat and Denver Bronco items, artwork and timeshare stays. Obtain tickets at Keystone Drug or Valley Foods. For details, call 846-2684 or visit www.deerlodgerialto.com. Design near complete The architect’s final design for the Rialto Theatre restoration will be completed soon. Modifications were made to areas that will save money. “We will be able to go further than expected with the money we have because of the changes made in the plan,” said Rialto board chairman Steve Owens. To date, approximately $1.3 million has been raised for the reconstruction that is expected to cost about $3.5 million. Work is expected to begin on June 16 and will progress as money is available. A challenge grant of $50,000 from Pioneer Federal Savings will match up to $50,000 received by June 1.
*************************************************************************** PRESS RELEASE FOR MARCH 3, 2008 Rialto Restoration Gets Gift, Challenge Restoration of the fire-damaged Rialto Community Theatre in Deer Lodge got another big boost this week with a $100,000 commitment from Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan of Deer Lodge and Dillon. $50,000 is an outright grant, and the other $50,000 is a challenge grant, with Pioneer Federal matching each dollar donated for the project up to that amount. This would make the total impact over $150,000. The Rialto board has set June 1, 2008 as the target date for matching the challenge, but expects to reach this goal before then because of the way donations have been coming in from all over the country. Total cost of the restoration project is about $3.5 million, and over $1.2 million has been raised so far. “Pioneer Federal has been a great friend to the Rialto since our non-profit bought it in 1995,” Rialto president Steve Owens said. “They donated over $32,000 toward the sound system, piano, marquee, and other improvements we made before the fire. We’re happy they are partnering with us to do this for the community. This is a great opportunity for people to double the value of their contribution.” Coupled with cuts that the board, architects, and engineers have made to bring down costs, and other recent gifts, this donation could allow actual rebuilding to start later this spring. Reconstruction will be done in five phases as funds are available. The first two involve the steel and concrete for the superstructure, and roughing in the heating, ventilation, and fire sprinkler systems. The ornate terra cotta façade, stage area, sidewalls and projection booth were saved, but the auditorium, balcony, lobby, and restrooms of the historic 720 seat facility were lost in the blaze on November 4, 2006. The building has a new roof, and the design for the new Rialto will provide the community with an accessible, functional building with 550 seats that will meet the need for performance spaces and a movie theatre for many years while retaining its historic character. The Rialto is used for all local school plays and concerts, civic events, affordable current movies on weekends, and many other events.. Donations to meet the challenge grant can be mailed to P.O. Box 874, Deer Lodge, MT 59722. More information is available at www.deerlodgerialto.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ February 5, 2008 DONATION RECEIVED FROM JR. HIGH STUDENT On February 5, 2008, the day that we received a check from the State of Montana, we also received a check that to most of us had a tremendous amount of meaning. Matthew Blair, son of Russell & Susie Blair, a Board member, presented Steve Owens with a check in the amount of $500. from his personal savings account. "What a huge donation from one young man", stated Steve Owens. Matthew had also testified before the Montana House of Representative and Senate and was indeed impressive with his impassioned plea for the Rialto Restoration. "Here is a young man who certainly puts his money where his mouth is", was the sentiment of Gayle Mizner. Matthew earns money from buying and selling items on eBay and his mother stated that the $500 was entirely his own and it was his idea to contribute to this community endeavor. Matthew is truly an inspiration to all of the board and we want him to know how much his very generous donation is appreciated!! THANKS A BUNCH, MATTHEW!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FEBRUARY 5, 2008 Governor Brian Schwitzer was in Deer Lodge today, Feb. 5, 2008, to present the community with a check representing the $50,000. that the legislature, through the Department of Commerce, awarded to the Rialto Theatre. Representative Cindy Hiner who sponsored the bill was also present, as well as board members, business people, students from Powell County High School and School district #1. The students of the Deer Lodge community accepted the check on behalf of the entire community! Pictures of the event are provided by Gayle Mizner, board member.
January 16, 2008: Board members, Susie Blair and Gayle Mizner receive check from Bette Browning, Treasurer of the Deer Lodge Woman's Club for $5,000. This is the second substantial donation received from the club. $7,000 was received last January. The main source of funding for the Woman's Club is the operation of New to You, a store located in Deer Lodge, that sells donated clothing and other items. The store is staffed entirely by volunteers. Rialto Restoration Fund would like to thank the Deer Lodge Woman's Club for their very generous support!! ***********************************************************************************************************************
This was the amount raised in their promotion for the month of June and it is certainly appreciated! ********************************************************************************************** Sunday, July 8, 2007 DEER PARK GOLF COURSE BENEFIT TOURNAMENT From the looks of the smiles of the faces of Board members of the Rialto at the Deer Park Golf Course, it appeared that the Benefit Tournament hosted by the golf course was a roaring success! Gayle Mizner reports that after all the various events were completed, it looks like there will be a profit of $5500 to be added to the restoration fund. That figure includes the $750. which the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will be adding to the fundraiser. There were 12 teams that participated with another 14 people joining the group for the dinner and auction. The main auction saw lots of active bidding with a couple special moments......when Neil Owens won the wine rack and promptly gave it to Gerianne Opie because Colleen Owens had heard her say before the auction that she would really love to have it but figured it would go too high! A very generous gesture Neil & Colleen! And Steve Flynn also outbid young Koby Owens for Gayle's homemade chocolate chip cookie dough only to give it to him after the bidding was over. Another highlight was when the Griz plaque went for a MUCH higher price than the Bobcat one.....(Sorry Carter.....it appears as though that is as it should be!) Speaking of Carter Meyer, coming from Missoula, his enthusiasm and participation was certainly appreciated! Dave & Goldie Mae Enger from Seattle, WA were also active and generous attendees! Thanks to all who golfed....without them we wouldn't have a tournament. It was a beautiful day and we missed the rain storms twice....The steaks were cooked to perfection by Jim Opie and Edie Anderson organized the ladies of the Deer Lodge Thrivent Lutherans who provided the salads and dessert. There were several ladies from that group that helped with the dinner and that was very much appreciated. As always, Grace & Chris Foster, Terry Evans and Jim Opie helped with all the tourney specifics and are really the pros in that department. Cele Pohle and Donna McCarthy did a fantastic job with the door prizes, announcements and main auction. I think Cele was going to move the podium to her house she liked it so well! Rialto Board members there were Steve Owens and Susie Blair, who manned the beer cart.....Ted Johnson, Mike Johns, & Gayle Mizner. Assisting at the Rialto table were Catherine & Frank Owens. A list of the Hole Sponsors and donations for the auctions and door prizes is above. A lot of very generous people and businesses made this a very successful and fun event. THANKS EVERYONE FOR EVERYTHING! ***************************************************************************************************************
